Purpose Learning Lab, Inc The Premier Drop In Studio
The Save Our Youth Initiative being funded by Durham County ABC seeks to reduce drug use and its negative consequences among participants.
"Purpose Learning Lab’s work is anchored in equity to ensure children and families from marginalized communities are prioritized and elevated through our STEAM Infused workshops, enrichment, and wellness programs. We also provide trauma -informed, evidenced based interventions to at-risk youth, children, teens, and families to reduce community violence and improve quality of life. To advance equity, we aim to reach diverse students and communities to champion change and empower historically underserved, underrepresented populations with greater academic opportunities to achieve brighter futures."
El Futuro, Inc.
"El Futuro is a community-based nonprofit organization that seeks to transform Latino-serving mental health care in North Carolina and beyond. We provide bilingual and culturally-responsive mental health services including therapy, psychiatry, substance use treatment, and case management in a welcoming environment of healing and hope. Our mission is to nurture stronger familias to live out their dreams."
"We meet clients where they are with a warm, outstretched hand. Instead of asking “what is your chief complaint?” we ask “what are your dreams?”, engaging those coming to us with a lens of affirmation and transformation."
Jubilee Home
Durham County ABC's support of this grant will allow Jubilee Home to expand its therapeutic services to include justice-involved women with substance abuse disorder and mental illness.
"Jubilee Home works with men in the Durham community to create a place that bridges the gap between incarceration and full independence.
Our goals as an organization balance the real social and psychological needs of residents with an understanding of community that comes from our belief that everyone has something to contribute."
Boys & Girls Club of Orange and Durham Counties
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Durham and Orange Counties (BGCDOC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and protecting children while preserving the beauty and innocence of childhood. We aim to make a fundamental difference in the lives of all youth, but especially those who need guidance the most by providing a safe alternative for youth between the ages of 6 and 18.
Urban Ministries of Durham
Funding from Durham County ABC is assisting with substance abuse education and recovery support at Urban Ministries of Durham.
"Urban Ministries of Durham is the primary point of connection for those who are homeless, hungry, or in need in Durham. With the help of nearly 4,000 volunteers, countless donations from the community, and dedicated staff, we serve some 6,000 people each year who come seeking food, shelter, clothing, and supportive services. We are the primary public homeless shelter in Durham, and we welcome neighbors regardless of race, ethnicity, religious beliefs or non-faith, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability. We provide immediate relief to those experiencing chronic or temporary homelessness and work with clients to end their homelessness as quickly and responsibly as possible. Last year, 118 people ended their homelessness at UMD."
LIFE Skills Foundation
"The transition to adulthood can be a challenging experience for anyone, regardless of personal background, socioeconomic status, gender, identity or race. It is certainly more challenging for youth who do not have the economic, familial or social supports that can assist them to overcome the many challenges on their journey to self-sufficiency and independence. LIFE Skills Foundation aims to provide a safety net and support network for transition age youth in Durham, NC, that do not have "someone" to turn to for help.
Central to LIFE Skills’ approach is the idea that each transition age youth we work with has the fundamental right to a life of happiness, full of possibility and free from oppression.
LIFE Skills is based on the philosophy that programming tailored to the individual is more effective than programming tailored to an idea or funding stream."
Student U
Everyone deserves opportunities in their educational journey that enable them to reach their full potential. Sadly, this isn’t the reality for many. Structural racism, intergenerational poverty, and other injustices create major obstacles for individuals and entire communities across the U.S., including here in Durham, N.C.
We are students, families, and educators cultivating joy and academic excellence in learning communities so all students thrive in Durham and beyond.
Durham PROUD Program
Durham PROUD's Drug Education and Alcohol Counseling program is supported by this year's Durham County ABC grant.
"The purpose of Durham PROUD (Personal Responsibility to Overcome with Understanding & Determination) is to foster responsible behavior among Durham's youth, to deter court-referred youth from becoming repeat offenders, and to decrease the dropout rate of students in Durham schools."
Durham County Justice Services Department
Durham County ABC supports the Durham Adult Drug Treatment Court.
"Previously known as Criminal Justice Resource Center, the mission of Durham County's Justice Services Department is to promote public safety through support for the local criminal justice system and to supervise and rehabilitate justice-involved individuals through a wide array of supportive services so that they may achieve their full potential as contributing members of their community."
"The Justice Services Department’s vision is to inspire every court-involved individual to become productive and responsible citizens in our community. We will support their efforts through continuous improvement driven by the integrity, teamwork, and innovation of JSD Staff."
